Updated: Jul 17, 2023
Welcome to the RCSummer blog, where I'll be sharing the thrilling updates from our summer camp adventure at Robert College in Istanbul, Turkey! Week 1 was an incredible experience as I joined fellow counselors from around the world for orientation and an immersive exploration of Istanbul. Let's dive into the exciting details of this unforgettable week!

Orientation: Building a Global Camp Family
As I arrived in Istanbul, I was greeted with warm smiles by the RCSummer team, who made sure our journey from the airport was smooth and enjoyable. The orientation sessions were designed to create a strong bond among the counselors. We engaged in ice-breaking activities, group discussions, and team-building exercises, fostering a sense of camaraderie and teamwork. Connecting with counselors from different backgrounds was truly inspiring, as we shared stories, experiences, and our enthusiasm for the summer ahead.
Exploring Istanbul: Unveiling a Vibrant City
During Week 1, we had the incredible opportunity to explore the vibrant city of Istanbul. Our knowledgeable guides led us through a whirlwind tour of iconic landmarks, such as the awe-inspiring Hagia Sophia, the breathtaking Blue Mosque, and the captivating Topkapi Palace. Strolling through the bustling streets of the Grand Bazaar, we immersed ourselves in the vibrant tapestry of Turkish arts, crafts, and flavors. From savoring mouthwatering Turkish delights to cruising along the Bosphorus, every moment was a feast for the senses. Istanbul's rich history and diverse culture left an indelible mark on me, and I couldn't wait to share this magic with our campers.
Connecting with Local Culture: Embracing Turkish Traditions
Immersing ourselves in the local culture was an integral part of Week 1. I felt incredibly fortunate to experience the warmth of Turkish hospitality firsthand as we interacted with locals who welcomed us with open arms. Engaging in conversations, sampling traditional Turkish cuisine, and sipping aromatic tea provided a genuine connection to the country's rich heritage. Learning the art of Turkish carpet weaving from skilled artisans was a truly immersive experience that deepened my appreciation for their craftsmanship. These encounters allowed me to embrace the beauty of Turkish traditions and gain a better understanding of the local community.
Team Building and Preparation: Setting the Stage
Week 1 was not just about exploration; it was also a time for us counselors to come together as a strong team. Through various team-building activities and workshops, we honed our leadership skills, improved communication, and enhanced our problem-solving abilities. We engaged in insightful discussions on child psychology, safety protocols, and program planning, ensuring that we were well-prepared to provide a safe and enriching experience for our campers.
